 1) What year was the advert produced?

The advert was produced in 1955.

2) How were women represented in most adverts in the 1950s?

They were represented as housewives or mothers.

3) What typography can be found in the advert and what connotations might this have?
The typography is in sans serif to suggest the product is new and modern

4) What does the costume, make-up and placement of the model (mise-en-scene) suggest about women's role in society in 1955?
That women had to look a certain way/presentable and shows that women's beauty is important.
5) Why is a picture of the product added to the bottom right of the advert?
a pack shot shows the product so the audience can recognise the product in shops.

6) What are the connotations of the chosen colours in this advert - red, white and blue?
The colour scheme connotates patriotism as it was world war two then, supporting your country.

7) How does the anchorage text use persuasive language to encourage the audience to buy the product? Give examples.
 The anchorage text uses repetition using positive words to direct the reader to more information.

Advertising and marketing

 Create a new blogpost called 'Advertising: Key conventions'. Look at this Skittles advert:




1) What key conventions of print adverts can you find and what are the connotations or deeper meanings of each convention? For each convention, write about how it communicates meaning to the audience. See the Maltesers advert above for an example of how to do this.

  • Slogan is 'taste the rainbow' to show that skittles have different colours and flavours
  • Background is a rainbow to show the variety of skittles

2) What is the USP (unique selling point) for Skittles and how do you know? Does the advert use any of persuasive techniques listed above?

The USP is the different colours and flavours. The use of the different colours and the rainbow background reinforces this. This persuades people to buy skittles.

Tatler represents people from the royal family and upper classes. Heat uses celebrities from all classes on their cover as it is mainly focused on gossip rather than class.
