Camerawork and editing - extension tasks

 1) Three camera shots:

The opening extreme close up shows us the main character (played by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson) has just landed in the jungle from a big height. This tells us from the beginning of the video that he is a very strong character.

The establishing shot of the jungle at 0:17 shows us the enormous size of the jungle and how small the main character seems in comparison. This could be to suggest that now he is by himself, something scary or terrifying could be about to happen.

The medium shot of the main character at 0:28 gives us a clearer view of the actor's face at this point in the scene. It shows him with his hand on his head and his face looking very concerned. This is to tell the audience that he is trying to solve a problem and he is worried he might not be able to do it.

2) Camera angles:

At 0:53, the director uses a worm's eye view to show the other characters landing roughly on the jungle floor. It makes their entrance very shocking and surprising to the audience as we have no idea where they come from. As a result, this is a contrast to earlier in the scene when Dwayne was alone in the silent jungle. Later at 3:15, the director switches between a high angle and low angle to show another character's shocked reaction at seeing their reflection in the river water. By starting with the low angle focusing on the character's face, it builds suspense because we do not know yet what the character can see. When the director switches to a high angle, we realise what the character can see.

3) Analyse the camera movement:

At the beginning of the video, the camera moves quite slowly throughout the jungle. This is because nothing exciting is happening. However, at 0:53, the camera movement becomes more shaky as the other characters land from sky. This makes the scene feel more chaotic - and neither the audience nor the characters seen tom know that is going on. Then, the camera movement switches back to moving more slowly around 1:10 as the other characters try to figure out how they ended up here.

At 1:33, the director is using a hand-held camera as the characters begin to move around. This could be to make it more realistic as it feels like we are right there in the jungle with them.

4) Analyse the editing:

The first cut occurs at 0:03 when the camera switches quickly from Dwayne's fall to him standing strong and uninjured. The camera then stays on his face for 12 seconds - allowing the audience to see his reaction to the environment. There is then another cut to show us what the jungle looks like. The next rapid cut is not until 0:52 seconds when the other characters land in the jungle. This shows how the pace of the scene and the action is increasing. For the rest of the video, the director mainly cuts from one medium shot to another as the characters have a conversation. This slows down the pace of the scene so that the audience can get to know each of the characters.
