Preferred reading: it looks delicious and would make the consumer hungry /want to buy it.

Oppositional reading: if a consumer is a vegetarian or dislikes meat then they will not want this. 

Negotiated reading: some consumers may be tempted by a big mac however they may not be able to eat it depending on cultural factors

Audience Effects Theory 2

 1) Write down a media product for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. 


INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE
Example media product: The Times newspaper
Why audiences enjoy it: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.

PERSONAL IDENTITY
Example media product: .anita and me 
Why audiences enjoy it: is nice for british/asian people to see stories about them. 

DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT
Example media product: music video
Why audiences enjoy it:   they can enjoy relaxing to the music and he visuals from the video.

RELATIONSHIPS
Example media product: football
Why audiences enjoy it:   Because the have following that team for a long time.

2) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).

Audience Effects Theory 1

 1) Write a definition of a passive audience: 

 This is the view that audiences passively take in information from the media and that these messages have the same effect on everyone.


2) Write a definition of an active audience: 

This is the more modern and generally accepted view that audiences interact with and make conscious choices regarding the media they consume.

 

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory: 

This is the suggestion that audiences are always passive and therefore take the intended message from the producer as if it was injected into their minds

4) Write a definition of the two-step flow theory:

This is the theory that consumers form their opinions based on opinion leaders like newspapers, politicians and, nowadays, celebrities.

5) What is YOUR opinion on the effect the media has on audiences? Do you think the media makes people think or act in a certain way? Give an example to explain your answer.

l think media can have a both positive and negative influence on audiences because of they can reach masses of people. For example, the rise of video games has had negative effects on teenagers as they develop high levels aggression.

Reception Theory

 1) What is the preferred reading of a media text?

How the producer wants the audience to view the media text. 


2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text?

 When the audience rejects the preferred reading, and creates their own meaning for the text.


3) What do the producers of the trailer want the audience to think about the teenagers and young people in the film?

They are presented as violent and aggressive


4) Why might some young people feel the way teenagers are presented in the trailer is unfair?

They might think its an unfair stereotype as not all teenagers behave this way.
